Kayaking at the Point

Kayak on the River

On waters flecked with gold a kayaker rounds the Point in Pittsburgh where the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers come together to form the Ohio.

I took this photo and the one below during the Three Rivers Arts Festival in June 2014. Today looked much the same as I drove through downtown Pittsburgh and looked at the rivers. Because the kayaker is in silhouette it was a little difficult to tell what he’s doing so I wanted to capture a shot with a clear shape of the paddle somewhere in the image, but the silhouette itself and the angle of the kayaker made that nearly impossible. I walked along the wharf keeping the kayaker in the line of the sun’s reflection, taking photos all the way, hoping I wouldn’t run into someone in the crowds at the festival and also hoping I wouldn’t just walk off the edge of the wharf.

I was rewarded with the photo above, also capturing the clear and focused sparkles in the front and softened sparkles behind the subject, and absolutely nothing else but him in the water. Below, I also wanted to get that fantastic sun that turned out so cool in so many of these photos, as well as a bridge and the hills beyond, so “Pittsburgh”.

Too bad the guardrail got in the way at the bottom!

Hello From Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh.

Someone let me loose on a lovely sunny warm spring day in Pittsburgh with my camera. I really just wandered one area, Mt. Washington, from where you can see to the end of the world. i will actually use a number of these for a design project I’m working on. I couldn’t get a good photo of the point so above is one from last year on just about exactly this date. Below is a “tiled mosaic” of some of the photos I took today.

Sunset on the River: 2010

Evening on the River

A storm late in the day often breaks out into a lovely colorful sunset as the layers of clouds all capture a different color and the sun itself glows red.

On the river, with shadows and reflections and ripples in the water, it’s even more beautiful. I equally like the view of the distance, the city still awake, the clouds parting, and the closeup area of the water, gently lapping against the dock.

I was on the Empress Party Liner docked on the Monongahela River recently, and just captured this quiet view up river.

Transportation Yesterday and Today: 2010

Transportation Yesterday and Today

I was walking along the Monongahela River in Pittsburgh and happened to get a good view of this traditional paddlewheel from a riverboat—and in the background the curving and rising on and off ramps from the Fort Pitt Tunnel. Behind, to the right, is the rail along the walking and biking trail. I couldn’t quite get the train tracks and in the image, but they are there too, and I know there’s a boat on the river because there’s always a boat on the river.
